| What are you doing Tuesday, May 5th? |
| Why not have a little fun and learn to design this? |
 |
I am taking a cue from David Palumbo, PE, Technology Manager for Infrastructure Services at Dewberry who was quoted at the Carlson User Conference as saying:
"We are achieving our original goals. It is highly cost effective, people are doing better work, and I think they are having fun." |
So, if you're ready to have fun again, join us for a hands-on test drive of Carlson Civil Suite.
The cost is only $49. You'll receive lunch and NC licensed engineers and land surveyors will also receive 6 PDH credits.
We encourage you to bring your own laptop or call in advance to reserve one of our training laptops. The first 30-45 minutes will be spent loading software. |
You can register for the training by clicking here. |

| AutoCAD Tip of the Month - DWG True View |
| |
| What is DWG True View? |
| |
DWG True View is a FREE download from Autodesk that can be used to view and plot your drawing (DWG) files. It will allow you to freeze and thaw layers, set your support paths in Options to find your fonts and linetypes and also to read your STB or CTB files.
Another huge benefit to using DWG True View is having the ability to convert any DWG file to and from other versions. Autodesk typically releases a new version of True View each year to support the newest release. In DWG True View 2009, you can convert DWG files between formats R14 to 2009 and anywhere in between. You can choose to convert one file at a time or many files at once. This is done by going to the File menu and picking the "DWG Convert" option.
There's more??
Yep. Many people don't realize that DWG True View provides some pretty handy file cleanup tools that can be used during a conversion. Or, if you don't need to Convert but still want to use the cleanup tools, just select the same version of the files and do a "mock" conversion.
Here are the options available for drawing cleanup: |

| Carlson Connection |
I was recently asked why there are so few places online to go to for help with or to find out more about Carlson Software. I think the main reason is that it is really pretty easy to use and they also provide their own free technical support.
However, I was also able to tell him that there would soon be a new place to go to.
I have worked with Felicia Provencal (Softdesk, Land Desktop, Survey, Map, Civil 3D, Raster Design, Buzzsaw guru extraordinaire), to develop a new website www.carlsonconnection.com to help support anyone trying to learn more about Carlson software and hardware offerings.
The Mission of the site?
Contributors to this site are, above all, fans of Carlson Software. However, the lack of exposure limits all of our prospects whether as resellers, consultants or employees who are proficient with the software.
There is no shortage of websites that promote other software programs. Our aim with this website is to increase Carlson's visibility in the industry and do it in a cooperative way that is most beneficial for anyone who needs more information.
What is unique about the site is that many of those who are or will be contributing are resellers of the software and, therefore, competitors. We have all agreed to withhold any mention of our own businesses when posting to the site - with the exception of each of our Biography pages. This way, we hope to get as many Carlson-lovers as possible to contribute. Also, this enables the folks employed at Carlson to contribute without seeming to favor one of their dealers over another.

At the Carlson User Conference, Brent Jones of ESRI announced a new grant program in coordination with Carlson Software. The program will bring ESRI products to every IntelliCAD-based Carlson program.
I understand that a few of the details have yet to be worked out, but Carlson IntelliCAD users should be hearing details in a few weeks.

| Need a reasonably priced alternative to AutoCAD or AutoCAD LT? |
Call us at (919) 417-8351 or email us to find out about a trial or purchase of Carlson GIS with IntelliCAD.
The IntelliCAD engine is a practical clone of AutoCAD and will read and write DWG files from all the way back to R11 and DXF back to R2.5 and up to Release 2009 (2010 coming soon). Pairing IntelliCAD with the Carlson GIS extends your capabilities beyond what AutoCAD or AutoCAD LT provide because it includes the following tools:
- Drawing Cleanup - Various cleanup tools including the ability to convert ellipses and splines to polylines, flatten extruded entities, ability to convert Land Desktop points and contours to basic IntelliCAD/AutoCAD entities, reduce polyline vertices, and many more tools.
- Ability to import and export LandXML files
- Ability to work with survey points
- Ability to use LISP routines and XREFs
- Ability to work with Z values and 3 dimensions
- Ability to work with GIS and Image files such as shape files and Mr. SID images
