| Have a Few Hours To Spare? |
| Why not have a little fun and learn to design this? |
 |
I am taking a cue from David Palumbo, PE, Technology Manager for Infrastructure Services at Dewberry who was quoted at the Carlson User Conference as saying:
"We are achieving our original goals. It is highly cost effective, people are doing better work, and I think they are having fun." |
So, if you're ready to have fun again, join us for a hands-on test drive of Carlson Civil Suite.
The cost is only $49. You'll receive lunch and NC licensed engineers and land surveyors will also receive 6 PDH credits.
We encourage you to bring your own laptop or call in advance to reserve one of our training laptops. The first 30-45 minutes will be spent loading software. |
Tuesday, July 7th in Garner, NC (near Raleigh)
Or
Wednesday, July 8th in Gastonia, NC (near Charlotte) |
|
| Lunch & Learn Fridays |
|
These interactive, online sessions will last approximately 1 hour. NC licensed engineers and surveyors who complete the follow-up quiz will receive 1 hour of PDH credit. Cost for each is $20. Follow links below to sign up or search by date on our Training Calendar. |

This 12-hour hands on training over 2 days will focus on the basics of Carlson Software along with a review of some AutoCAD/IntelliCAD features that will assist in working with Carlson.
Some of the CAD topics to be covered are: drawing template setup, text & linetype sizing, layer
management and working with polylines.
Some of the Carlson topics to be covered are: project management, working with points and
basics of surface modeling.
Please bring your own laptop or call to reserve one of ours. Software will be provided if needed.
Surface Modeling with Carlson Software
This 12-hour hands on training over 2 days will focus the creation of both existing and proposed
surfaces.
Some of the topics to be covered are: surface modeling from points and breaklines, surfaces from contours and/or proposed breaklines, how to daylight slopes and volume calculations. Some time will also be spent in discussion or exercises to work toward taking 2D drawings and making them into 3D models suitable for machine control surface files.
Please bring your own laptop or call to reserve one of ours. Software will be provided if needed.

Need a reasonably priced alternative to AutoCAD or AutoCAD LT? |
Call us at (919) 417-8351 or email us to find out about a trial or purchase of Carlson GIS with IntelliCAD.
The IntelliCAD engine is a practical clone of AutoCAD and will read and write DWG files from all the way back to R11 and DXF back to R2.5 and up to Release 2009 (2010 coming soon). Pairing IntelliCAD with the Carlson GIS extends your capabilities beyond what AutoCAD or AutoCAD LT provide because it includes the following tools:
- Drawing Cleanup - Various cleanup tools including the ability to convert ellipses and splines to polylines, flatten extruded entities, ability to convert Land Desktop points and contours to basic IntelliCAD/AutoCAD entities, reduce polyline vertices, and many more tools.
- Ability to import and export LandXML files
- Ability to work with survey points
- Ability to use LISP routines and XREFs
- Ability to work with Z values and 3 dimensions
- Ability to work with GIS and Image files such as shape files and Mr. SID images

| Carlson Software Tip - Quick Profile |
The Quick Profile command is available in Carlson Software's Survey, Civil, TakeOff (and maybe other) modules.
This is a very simple, but powerful command that allows you to quickly generate a profile between two points, by selecting a polyline or along a pre-defined centerline file. Also, it's not even necessary to create a surface prior to defining the profile alignment - you can simply select contours, points or triangles to use for surface data.
If you create the Quick Profile from a surface file, the command provides a "preview" window that will dynamically update if you adjust the alignment used to generate the profile. And, when finished, you can save it as a Profile (.pro) file or insert it in the drawing.
The Quick Profile command is found under the Profiles Menu in the Civil module, under the Surface Menu in Survey and under the Tools Menu in TakeOff. |
|
| IntelliCAD Tip - IntelliCAD Explorer |
IntelliCAD Explorer is a powerful tool available in IntelliCAD that is a combination of AutoCAD's Layer Manager, Text Styles dialog, Linetype manager and AutoCAD Design Center.
From IntelliCAD Explorer you can:
- Create and manage layers
- Create and manage text styles
- Create and manage linetype definitions
- Create and manage dimension styles
- Create and manage block definitions
What most people don't realize is that you can also use IntelliCAD Explorer to copy and paste all of these items (layers, text styles, linetypes, etc.) from one drawing to another.
If you have more than one drawing open, you can expand each drawing in IntelliCAD Explorer to see the defined items in each as shown in the images below. |

Finding Windows When Switching from 2 Monitors to 1 |
Many of us have finally resigned ourselves to using more than 1 monitor to work in our CAD programs because of the number of dialog boxes, palettes and toolbars we need to have open. But, when you have to go back to one monitor because you're on your laptop or for some other reason, we have had trouble finding all those windows we had residing on the now "missing" monitor.
When this happens, make sure your CAD program is the active window and then press Shift+Alt+Space to manage the controls for the program. Now you can shift around or open or close windows, palettes and toolbars as needed. |

| Carlson Connection |
I was recently asked why there are so few places online to go to for help with or to find out more about Carlson Software. I think the main reason is that it is really pretty easy to use and they also provide their own free technical support.
However, I was also able to tell him that there would soon be a new place to go to.
I have worked with Felicia Provencal (Softdesk, Land Desktop, Survey, Map, Civil 3D, Raster Design, Buzzsaw guru extraordinaire), to develop a new website www.carlsonconnection.com to help support anyone trying to learn more about Carlson software and hardware offerings.
The Mission of the site?
Contributors to this site are, above all, fans of Carlson Software. However, the lack of exposure limits all of our prospects whether as resellers, consultants or employees who are proficient with the software.
There is no shortage of websites that promote other software programs. Our aim with this website is to increase Carlson's visibility in the industry and do it in a cooperative way that is most beneficial for anyone who needs more information.
What is unique about the site is that many of those who are or will be contributing are resellers of the software and, therefore, competitors. We have all agreed to withhold any mention of our own businesses when posting to the site - with the exception of each of our Biography pages. This way, we hope to get as many Carlson-lovers as possible to contribute. Also, this enables the folks employed at Carlson to contribute without seeming to favor one of their dealers over another.
