BIM This, BIM That...
And How Does BIM Relate To Civil Engineering?
Q:    What is BIM? And, exactly how does it relate to the civil engineering industry?

A:    BIM, by definition, has nothing to do with civil engineering.

BIM stands for "Building Information Modeling". The term "BIM" originated in the Architectural world and, generally, defines the process of inputting information to and extracting information from a 3D model of a building/facility.

Top Myths About Carlson Software
Click on each myth for details

Myth #1    Autodesk stopped working with Carlson in 2008. False.
Myth #2   Carlson is owned by Autodesk or, ("bonus"-myth) Carlson will be sold to another, larger software company. False.
Myth #3   Because Carlson Software uses basic AutoCAD entities instead of "intelligent objects", it does not have 3D or dynamic abilities. False.
Myth #4   Because Carlson now works on top of Intellicad, it no longer works on top of AutoCAD-based products. False.
Myth #5   Carlson doesn't have CIVIL "BIM"-ability. False.
Myth #6   Carlson has only been developing civil software since 2007. False.
Myth #7   Carlson may have found a spot in some surveying firms, but larger firms aren't using it. False.
Myth #8   Carlson Software does not support the full project lifecycle - Concept to Completion. False.
Myth #9   Carlson Software doesn't have the support system in place to adequately support its users. False.
Myth #10   Carlson Software can't share data with Land Desktop or Civil 3D. False.

The Civil Suite package includes:
Carlson Survey, Civil, Hydrology and GIS
All programs can be run on top of your existing
2000-2009 AutoCAD, Map, Land Desktop, Civil 3D
Or on top of the IntelliCAD engine that is included with all programs.

AutoCAD 2010 Release, Autodesk 2006 Software
and Land Desktop Retirement
Autodesk has announced that their 2010 products will be released on March 24, 2009. I found this post by Randy McSwain to be a good overview of the new features in AutoCAD 2010.

As of March 13, 2009, Autodesk no longer supports or offers upgrades from their 2006 products.

Because of the retirement of Land Desktop, I see that Autodesk is offering to crossgrade existing Land Desktop customers to Map or Civil 3D with special pricing. Subscription will probably be mandatory, but I'm not certain.

Carlson Software User Conference
Carlson Software User Conference
April 5-7, Lexington KY - Jennifer DiBona, That CAD Girl, will be presenting two classes at this year's Conference:
  • IntelliCAD/AutoCAD Differences and
  • CAD Management for AutoCAD and IntelliCAD.

AutoCAD Tip

(More) Intelligent Dimensions

When dimensioning our drawings we often need to add short notations before or after the measured dimension such as adding "Typical" as shown below.
If you try to do this manually by typing in the text, "18.00' Typical", then you lose the ability of the dimension object to dynamically update if the distance changes. However, if you manually type in, "<> Typical" as the text override value, the "<>" will continue to read the distance defined by the dimension object. See the value as shown in Object Properties below:

Two more examples are shown below:
In example #1, we have added the note "TYP OF END SPACES" after our measured distance and have forced a line break after the word "OF". In example #2, we have added a note and also forced a line break but, this time, we want the line to break above and below the dimension line.

  • To force a basic line break, add the characters "\P" at the desired position.
  • To force a line break above and below the dimension line, add the characters "\X" at the desired position.
The Text Override value for Example #1 reads: <> TYP OF\PEND SPACES.

The Text Override value for Example #2 reads: <> TYP OF\XINTERIOR SPACES.

Guinea Pig (Free!) Online Training
Model Space and Paper Space
For awhile I've wanted to venture into a structured set of lessons for online training. Before launching it, I'd like to hold a little "test-drive" session to make sure I'm able to coordinate multiple (up to 10) attendees and manage everyone's questions and answers without it being a headache to all who attend.

On Friday, April 3rd at 11:30 AM EDT, I will be holding a free presentation discussing how to work with model space and paper space. Because we will probably have a few technical glitches, I won't charge for it but I do need to have people register in advance. If we have more than 10 interested, I will hold additional sessions.

Please Email me here or call (919) 417-8351 to register.

Need a reasonably priced alternative
to AutoCAD or AutoCAD LT?
Call us at (919) 417-8351 or email us to find out about a trial or purchase of Carlson GIS with IntelliCAD.

The IntelliCAD engine is a practical clone of AutoCAD and will read and write DWG files from all the way back to R11 and DXF back to R2.5 and up to Release 2009 (2010 coming soon). Pairing IntelliCAD with the Carlson GIS extends your capabilities beyond what AutoCAD or AutoCAD LT provide because it includes the following tools:
  • Drawing Cleanup - Various cleanup tools including the ability to convert ellipses and splines to polylines, flatten extruded entities, ability to convert Land Desktop points and contours to basic IntelliCAD/AutoCAD entities, reduce polyline vertices, and many more tools.
  • Ability to import and export LandXML files
  • Ability to work with survey points
  • Ability to use LISP routines and XREFs
  • Ability to work with Z values and 3 dimensions
  • Ability to work with GIS and Image files such as shape files and Mr. SID images
Read more about IntelliCAD here and see a 5 minute overview here.
